Great news for all of you gourmet coffee drinkers. A new study suggests that coffee may fight Alzheimer’s and dementia. Apparently, it works by blocking the effects of high cholesterol on the brain. So drink up and stay away from the decaffeinated coffee because they didn’t study that.
We’ve all heard of studies that link coffee and memory, so if you can remember to make sure you have at least a cup of coffee a day. Obviously, you should consult your physician before consuming anything that may or may not help your health. But, if my doctor told me that I could drink coffee, especially a nice flavored coffee in the evening with a piece of cheesecake, I might find another doctor.
If you are not already a coffee drinker you should consider taking the habit up. It seems like they discover a new health benefit of coffee everyday. That may have something to do with the fact that all of the researchers are coffee addicts and they are desperately trying to find a reason to justify their habit. Whatever the reason the rest of us coffee aficionados appreciate their efforts in helping us to convince everybody that we drink the black goodness for our health and the fact that we love the way it tastes is just an added benefit.
So, now that the health benefits of gourmet coffee are out there should be no problems getting the approval from our doctors.
If you want to find out more about the study that was conducted the findings were published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. I know everyone has a copy of that just lying around. The research was performed by scientists at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Apparently they used rabbits, caffeine and a cholesterol enriched diet. The diet was for the rabbits not the researchers.
I normally don’t agree with animal testing, but it sounds like the rabbits had the same thing I have for breakfast. So, until I learn to eat better I don’t think I’m in any position to judge.
